a flutter or kaleidoscope of butterflies of all colors

Bible Stories

Although I have not written these stories in chronological order, I am putting them on this page as they occurred in the Scriptures. Large time gaps will appear between some of them, which I may or may not be able to fill. Time will tell.

GENESIS

Butterfly Creation

Genesis 1

In the beginning, butterflies are only a gleam in God’s eyes. God’s Spirit flutters over the waters of chaos. God determines to create order out of the chaos.

Day 1: Not that God cannot see, but the creatures of Creation will need light. God coaxes the light out of the darkness and separates them into day and night.

Adam and Eve

Genesis 2-3

The story gets a little funny here. I heard it from two different butterfly ancestors, and they couldn’t agree on some details. They didn’t agree about some of Creation, in what order and when. Great-great-ever-so-many-greats Aunt Bessie told me how God created butterflies, the story I already told you.

Consequences of the Tower

Genesis 11:1-9

You’ve probably never tried to build a tower up to the heavens, especially with no cranes, no bulldozers, no machinery of any kind. We had ropes and poles and our own brute strength. And we actually made quite a bit of progress. The tower rose higher and higher and higher. Now it’s kind of hard to determine where the heavens are,

Genesis 16:1-16, 21:14-21

God promised Abram(Abraham) a son, but Sarai (Sarah), Abram’s wife, was barren and too old. According to the custom of the time, Sarai sends Hagar, her slave, to Abram to bear the son for her. Trouble follows.

Sacrificing the Child of the Promise

Genesis 22

“Why have you been crying, Mother?” Isaac stood at the tent door, staring at his mother. He stepped inside and took her hand. “We’re going to make a special sacrifice. We’ll be back within a few days.”

Her smile did not reach her eyes as she waved him away.

The Transition of the Promise

Genesis 22:1-19, 25:19-34, 27:1-5

My line is with Isaac, who is near the end of his life. He’s blind and bedridden. And to be honest, I feel sorry for him.

See, he’s almost never been a doer, the one who started something. He’s had some rough times, but not usually something he initiated. He didn’t even always respond to what happened.

Jacob’s Butterflies

Genesis 25:19-34, 26:34-28:5

Part 1 of “Jacob’s Butterflies”

While my ancestor was in his cocoon, God called him in and told him about a pair of twins. Which one did he want? When God described the older one , a hunter, my ancestor asked about the second one. God said that he wasn’t, so he said he would take that one. Let me tell you, since leaving the safety of my shell, several of us in his line have wondered about that decision.

Jacob’s Ladder

Genesis 28:10-30:22

Part 2 of “Jacob’s Butterflies”

So Jacob left home and headed north. Now Jacob was headed for Haran, which is a long ways to the north east of Beer-sheba. And we were on foot! Well, he was. I fly, using my wings. So we had a lot of time together. And as he walked, I realized that he was finally beginning to think. Not to scheme and plan, but to think … about himself, about his family, and about God.

EXODUS

Saving Boy Babies

Exodus 1:15-21

The women walked slowly out of the palace. They did not notice the yellow pansy butterfly accompanying them.

Neither said a word until they passed through the door into Shiphrah’s adobe-brick house. Puah’s arms flew out, and her eyes blazed as she struggled to control her voice.

A Slave in Pharaoh’s Palace

Exodus 5-12:38

One advantage, if there were any, of being a slave was that it made one invisible, especially a young one, only a child and a girl at that. Nobody paid any attention to her, wandering through the big hall where Pharaoh and his advisors met to discuss weighty matters. All she had to do was look busy, like on some important errand, like she had a reason for being where she was. She learned that technique at an early age.

First Kings

Flour and Oil

1 Kings 17:7-16

“Maybe the rain will come this spring,” the father said.

It did not. Only a few pretty flowers bloomed for the few butterflies that returned.

Before the time of harvest, the father died, leaving his widow to support their young son.
